While I'm not a believer that forming electrolytic capacitors is absolutely necessary, the variac
is a great tool for bringing up the power on a PTP slowly to watch for overcurrent conditions and
other issues that, if hit with full voltage immediately could be catastrophic. Remember, though, that most variacs, including these, are autotransformers so they are not isolated from the power line. To be absolutely safe, you
should use an isolation transformer ahead of the variac.
